LDSC youngster, Natalie Main, travelled down to Surrey at the weekend hopeful of some good results at the Gold event there in the Under17 category, having been in fine form in the past few weeks in the Herts League playing for Berkhamsted. Her seeding meant that she got a bye in the first round and disposed of her Surrey based opponent Ayesha Adnan in quick time.
In the quarter final she faced Essex no 1 and competition 2nd seed Lara Newton. Both the first two games went to tie breaks and Main saved several game balls to take both 14-12 in tie breaks. Newton roared back to level at 2 each taking it to a decisive 5th game and at 5-3 and 6-4 down, it looked like Newton would complete the comeback but some astonishing squash saw Main take it on her first game (match) ball to triumph 11-9 in the decider.
The semi final saw her face Hampshire star Megan Light and Main seemed lacklustre after her earlier exertions failing to get going until the third game by which time it was all too little too late.
In the 3rd/4th play-off match she faced Cheshire's Isobel Sargent. Main started well and at 10-8 seemed destined to take the first, but missed several opportunities and lost it 12-10, the second was won decisively by Sargent, but Main showed some real fighting spirit to take the 3rd, however, Sargent finished the job in the 4th despite Main battling hard.
Overall a satisfactory 4th place finish, her highest ever in a Gold event, with lots of positives and plenty to learn
