With the British Junior Open fast approaching (2nd-6th Jan) in Birmingham, two LDS youngsters took part in the Wimbledon Christmas Bronze at the weekend, with Lily Main returning with the runners up trophy.
Lily and her younger sibling Natalie, took part in the Wimbledon Bronze this weekend and it was an early start for the girls. Natalie faced no1 seed Ameerah Elgarhy first off in the U17 category (Nat was playing up as she still qualifies for U15 with a year to spare). Elgarhy used her bigger stature to good effect and whilst Natalie battled hard it was always an uphill battle. Lily started her campaign against Alice Lloyd of Middlesex and got over a sluggish start to triumph 3-0.
In the round robin format it was of course inevitable that the sisters played each other. This time it was the turn of Lily to show the best composure at the crucial times, and breaking with recent form won without Natalie registering a game, meaning a final between Elgarhy and Main, whilst Natalie played for 3/4 place against Lloyd.
Natalie won with relative ease, and whilst Lily could have won the first playing some great squash, she failed to take her opportunities and faded as the match went on to finish a creditable second against a player ranked much higher than her.
