The Lewsey Squash and Fitness Centre hosted finals day for the County Closed on Sunday 12th December and went on to be dominated by LDS members.
The day kicked off early with Adil Maqbool, fresh from narrowly losing in the quarter final of the BSPA Closed Event in Boston Lincs, taking on regining champion Steve Barlow from Biggleswade club. A sparsely attended match saw Adil see off Steve in very quick time as time after time the ball seemed to be magnetically drawn to the nick. It was virtually exhibition play with Steve often chasing shadows and clearly wilting under severe pressure.
Later in the afternoon, Dean Pike took part in a very tightly contested Plate Final. Unfortunately, Dean lost 3-1, but the feeling in the gallery was that with a bit of luck he could have easily taken the 4th and set-up a nerve jangling climax, sadly it was not to be.
The final was almost inevitably between the County's two best current players, long-time club stalwart, Steve Davies and newcomer Adil. The first game was a tremendously tight affair and Steve clearly had Adil under pressure and somewhat rattled. The gallery, were in the main, rooting for the underdog, but ultimately Adil's greater experience told and he prevailed 15-13 to take the first game and that seemed to knock the stuffing out of Steve.
Steve, described his performance in words that are not really printable, but he was being harsh on himself, he put up a great fight and had done well given that the day before in the semi-final winning a 5 game thriller.
