Herts Second Team Battle On

Herts Second Team Battle On

Injuries and absence plague the seconds

As the second team reach the half way stage of the Herts Summer league season, what seemed like a good idea at the time, has transpired to be a testing period for the side.

With only three players required per team during the summer season, the decision was made to enter two sides into the Herts League, with John Blackwell, Amir Jafri and the Main family forming the core squad for the seconds. Even with Amir only available for home matches it was felt the side could be quite competitive, but also fulfil its dual role of developing the juniors.

The first blow was to discover that Amir would be unavailable until 8 of the 9 matches in the first half of the season had been played, then after 4 matches John Blackwell picked up a nasty ankle injury ruling him out for several weeks. The loss of these players has been somewhat mitigated by the emergence of new member Tim Bliss who has stepped up to the plate and integrated like he had always been  involved.

It’s probably best to gloss over the series of defeats with only John Blackwell troubling the markers in the early weeks of the season, followed by Paul Main playing above his station at 1 and regular thrashings. In the final match of the first half of the season, Amir appeared over the horizon like a returning saviour to help the side register their first win of the season and keep them off the bottom slot over new entrants Bushey.
