LDS Sign off Season with a win

Injuries and unavailability have meant that the LDS campaign in the Beds league fizzled out before a serious challenge for the title could be mounted but they triumphed in their final game to at least sign off in style.

The final game of the season saw Luton and Dunstable Squash club take on title chasing Flitwick. Flitwick were sitting second in the table only a few points behind Open University and whilst LDS themselves are now well out of contention for the title they were quietly confident of an upset.

Perhaps the key match of the night was between LDS’s Matt Mulara and the visitor’s Mark Trew at number 3 string. This was an even contest throughout with Mulara just shading it for shot quality and control but Trew was clearly the fitter player. Mulara played his best squash of the season to go 2-0 up and then a brutal 3rd saw him on the brink of victory at 14-10 up. Mulara looked out for the count though and Trew sensing this picked up the pace and saved 4 match balls to get back to 14-14 before Mulara somehow found two winners and took the match 3-0.

The host’s Steve Wells fresh from a stunning recent 3-2 victory against Gemma Stanton from David Lloyd was up against Trevor Kedo who has to be the best number 4 in the league. Wells, as ever, gave it everything and it was certainly not one sided but Kedo's quality told in the end as he leveled the match at 1-1.

The tie remained neck and neck as Scott Richardson found his Flitwick opponent Steve Mullens just too consistent and went down 3-0, whilst debutant Odhran Imlah put in an excellent display to beat the away captain Gary Milner 3-1. Imlah at only 17 years of age showed great control and quality in the face of a typical Milner onslaught characterised by hard hitting and all out aggression. After going 2-0 down Milner dug deep and looked like he may take it to a 5th set but it was not to be and the match was left in the balance at 2-2.

The night was all set up for the decider between the two number 1's Steve Davies and Matt Suckling. Suckling is well known for his array of attacking shots but they had little effect on Davies as he took the first 15-6. Suckling tried to lengthen the rallies in the second and change tactics but Davies remained in control and took the last two games 15-10, 15-7 to seal an excellent home victory for LDS.

With captain Steve Davies joining Club Towers next season and several youngsters moving to university LDS will be on a recruitment drive next season if they wish to be competitive.
